Alerts can be set up in one of two ways:
1) "Workflow Defaults" in Tools: This applies to every task you save. It applies on a user-by-user basis, so your other users will need to set up Defaults as well.
2) The "Alerts" tab in each and every task: Only applies to that specific task, can be set by any user to affect all users who relate to that task.
The "Workflow Defaults" will apply it's settings to every task you save, with no exceptions. If the task is created by you, and assigned to someone else, it will apply the defaults. If it is created by you, and assigned to you, it will apply the defaults. There's no way to limit it to only apply the defaults to specific tasks.

What we recommend you do to get this set up how you want it:
1) Go to Tools > Workflow Defaults
2) Tick the box for "Task is Completed", and set it to "Email" and select "Adviser" in the Recipient field.
This will cause tasks you create to send you an email whenever they are completed (since you are the only Adviser in your user group).
You'll also need your other users to set the same default - they can set up defaults to alert themselves as well, if they need to, but they must do the above 2 steps as well for this to work system-wide.
Note that this will only apply to tasks created after you set the default.
If you want to receive Alerts only for Tasks that are not assigned to you, whenever you go and create a task where the Assignee is you (aka, the ones you don't want to receive alerts about), once you enter in all the task details, go to the Alerts tab, and in the row for 'Task is Completed', untick all the options within Recipients (or, if you did not originally create the task, leave 'Assigner' ticked as it won't go to you and someone else might be relying on it).
This will prevent it from emailing you on completion.
